"A Judge of the ITLOS will be called to perform, deeper and deeper, an interdisciplinary role in the field of Law of the Sea: interpreter of the law and of the impacts of such interpretation over the sea as a part of the life cycle of all States."

 

"A Judge of the ITLOS performs many roles beyond the exercise of his/her jurisdictional power. A Judge is also a restless researcher, a dedicated teacher, and  a pro-active co-operator in spreading the law of the sea but the justice of the sea for "the benefit of mankind as a whole".
