"Law of the Sea... Law of the Peoples"

"The rising of ocean’s level affects small islands severer than continental states."

___

“The sea is my life, as it is for many peoples around the world, especially those living on small islands and coastal zones.”

 ___

"The climate change is jeopardizing the cycle of life, the heritage, the culture and tradition of small islands and coastal zones peoples.

Many islands, cities and villages are at the real risk of disappearing due to climate change. Perhaps, existing conventions whether the law of the sea or that on climate change is not enough. Perhaps, it is only a matter of interpretation and application of such conventions. We may agree, in both cases, that new approaches and interpretations of law will be needed in the near future.  Or we may say, they are inescapable right now.”

“I am aware of these questions and situations. I am a field researcher and also lawyer of the sea. We, in Brazil, suffer with landslides, floods, torrential storms in our coastal zone every year. And these are becoming severely season after season. ”

___

“I am an interdisciplinary specialist with a broad view of all challenges to be faced by the Law of the Sea and by the ITLOS in the near future."
